its recoverable until you make the heads land on the platters ,the hdds are almost air sealed to make the heads "float" over the platters ,also the arm brake ,a plastic piece in the head arm ,dont work as intended with the cover opened. usually you can fix these drives with hdd regenerator . saddly im 7 years late to explain all this info :( .never make a mechanical hdd run open , 99% of times you just killed the heards ,making it unrecoverable for a user at home.
